Google doodle remembers M.S. subbulakshmi on her 97th birthday, the great carnatic vocalist who was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Born in madurai to a musician family on 16th September 1916, started learning Carnatic music at an early age from her mother who belong to devdashi community was a music exponent and a regular stage performer.
M.S subbulakshmi was also the first indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay award, often considered Asia’s Nobel Prize, in 1974. She participated in several concert all across the globe and was like indian cultural ambassador. She also acted in few tamil movies in the early stage of her career. She died on December 11 2004 at the age of 88.
Paying tribute to M.S. subbulakhsmi, google doodle changed its logo featuring her playing veena in a picture also showing other famous indian musical instruments including tabla and pakhwaj.
