The pin board style photo sharing website pinterest is planning to launch promoted pins as part of its advertisement program. The announcement made by Ben Silbermann, CEO & Co-Founder of pinterest in their official blog post on Thursday.
The leading interest socializing website pinterest, which allows users to categorize their theme based images collection, browse other pinboard for images and even re-pin images to their own pinboard, will experiment promoting certain pins from a select group of businesses. The initiative will ensure revenue generation for the company in order to keep its growth and development.
However, unlike other social networking websites, pinterest will abstain from banner ads and ben has a clear view about their advertising program. Pinterest will not go for flashy banner ads and irritating pop-ups and the user will always know whether a pin or pinboard is paid one or not. Apart from these, The ads will be relevant to your actual interest and even go for improvement based on your feedback.
Writing in his official blog post CEO Ben has said that they are going to promote a few pins in search results and category feeds. For example, a pin for a Darth Vader outfit from a costume shop might be promoted in a search for “halloween”. This promotion will be free as they want to test how things go on and perceived by the users.
Pinterest also have another monetizing program where it collects its commission from any sell made through its outward affiliate links.
The initiative is also seen in context of its close rival newyork based fancy recent growth and popularity which secured an investment of $53 million from will smith and american express a couple of months ago.
